What practices told us when they left Rectangle for NexHealth

Cancellations fill themselves. Rectangle never did that part.

On Rectangle, the terminal took the card and that was the whole job. Patients filled out a website form and waited for a call back, and the office lost two or three appointments a day. They replaced both with NexHealth.

Office manager, single-location dental practice

Payments post to the ledger. Patient and insurance split on their own.

On Rectangle, a payment posted only if that patient's ledger was open in Dentrix. If someone had a different patient open and ran the card, it posted to the wrong patient. The office moved payments to NexHealth.

Forms write back to the chart. Medical alerts too.

On Rectangle, payments were down for weeks, and the forms tool beside it never made sending a form by text easy, so the doctor was still on paper. They signed NexHealth for payments first, then forms, texting and recall.

Who does the job: software, or your staff

Buying a payment processor means your staff does the job, next to that terminal.

The job

With NexHealth

With Rectangle

Keeps your calendar full

With NexHealth

NexHealth, on its own

  • Waitlist that fills cancellations on its own
  • Online scheduling on your website, Google Maps and invisalign.com
  • Tracks which bookings came from where

With Rectangle

Your staff, by hand

Rectangle takes the payment. Filling the chair is not its job. When a patient cancels, the front desk calls down the list, or a second system does.

Gets patients ready before they walk in: forms done, insurance checked, card on file

With NexHealth

NexHealth, on its own

  • Custom forms that sync to the patient chart
  • Reads the insurance card from a photo
  • Texts the patient when their insurance ID is wrong or expired
  • Collects a card on file at booking or in the forms

With Rectangle

Your staff, by hand

Rectangle stores a card on file. Forms and insurance checks run on another system. Practices pair it with a second vendor for both.

Collects your balances

With NexHealth

NexHealth, on its own

  • Posts every payment to the ledger
  • Works out the patient portion vs insurance on its own
  • Text to pay, email, terminal and online portal
  • Patient statements
  • Surcharging

With Rectangle

Your staff, by hand

Rectangle's text to pay is a link your staff pastes into a text, balance typed by hand. Patients at one practice said it looked like spam. Statements still go out on paper or through a second vendor.

Writes it all back to your practice management system

With NexHealth

NexHealth, on its own

Every feature works with your practice management system, because the connection is ours and not a third party's.

With Rectangle

Your staff, by hand

Rectangle posts through a bridge app on some systems and not at all on others. The bridge needs the right patient's ledger open. Wrong patient open, wrong ledger. Many practices post by hand.

Gets you live

With NexHealth

An onboarding manager, with you

A person in San Francisco installs the sync and sets up your reminders, forms and online booking. 7 days from signed to live.

With Rectangle

Your staff, with help articles

Terminals ship and you get a login. Rectangle lists 500+ systems it works with and 30+ it connects to directly. Which posting path your system gets is worked out during onboarding.

Picks up when you call

With NexHealth

A person in Draper, Utah

40 seconds to reach a person by phone.

With Rectangle

Your staff, left to their own

Rectangle advertises 24/7 support. In February 2026 ransomware took its payments down. Practices typed payments in by hand for weeks, some for two months, and were still charged.

Questions practices ask us

Is Rectangle Health owned by private equity?

Yes. GI Partners bought a stake in November 2021, with TA Associates staying in. An outside CEO replaced the founder in March 2023, and the founder was back as CEO by 2025. Rectangle says it serves 40,000 providers.

What does Rectangle cost?

Its site says plans start at $40 a month and processing from 1.99%. Software fees run $100 to $149 a month per location, and merchant statements show blended rates from 3% to nearly 6%. The rate is interchange plus a markup that changes by card type, so most practices do not know their real rate until they pull a statement. Pull three months of merchant statements before you compare.

What happened in the Rectangle outage?

On February 6, 2026 a ransomware attack on Rectangle's payment gateway took its processing down. Service came back around February 26. Terminals were out for a week and posting was out for weeks, some for two months. Staff typed payments in by hand and called patients for balances. Several practices were still charged fees that month, and some never turned the integration back on.

Does Rectangle post payments to my practice management system?

On some systems, through its posting tool. It posts when the patient's ledger is open, and on some systems not at all. Statements and the end-of-day reconciliation stay with your staff.

Does Rectangle do reminders, online scheduling and forms?

It sells a patient engagement add-on called Bridge Engagement. It is not in any of the four plans on its pricing page, and its 2025 product news was all payments. Practices run reminders, scheduling and forms on another system.

Do I need to buy out my Rectangle contract to switch?

Check your agreement for the term, the notice period and the fee. Terms run three years, with a $700 early termination fee on a single office and a six-figure buyout quoted to a 19-location group. Terminals are sometimes leased or tied to a loan. Some fees are waived if Rectangle cannot match a written rate offer, so get the number in writing before you give notice.

Who owns NexHealth?

Its founders, backed by Silicon Valley investors. The roadmap comes from what practices ask for, and new product updates ship most weeks: 880+ releases in the past five years.

How do I switch from Rectangle to NexHealth?

A NexHealth person installs the sync, sets up your reminders, forms and online booking, and walks your front desk through it. 7 days from signed to first feature live.

Does NexHealth work with my practice management system?

15 systems, dental and medical, cloud and on premise: Dentrix, Dentrix Ascend, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, Denticon, Curve, Cloud9, Dolphin, eClinicalWorks, athenahealth, NextGen, ModMed and more. The full list is at nexhealth.com/integrations.

Is NexHealth for medical practices too?

Yes. 19 specialties: dental, orthodontics, primary care, dermatology, physical therapy and more.
